Residency of Danish artist Niels Pagh Andersen, an experienced film editor with an international career spanning over 40 years, who came to the island in May 2023 to join a documentary film project by director Gonçalo Tocha and collaborate with AvistaVulcão on a mentoring project that will take place in several phases of work over the next few seasons. During his residencies, in addition to dedicating himself to his work as an editor on the island documentary film project, Niels Pagh Andersen also leads open sessions for the community about his professional experience as an editor of over 250 films and his approach to the creative process in transdisciplinary artistic and cultural projects.

Niels Pagh Andersen began his career as an assistant on fiction films when he was 16 years old. Since 1979, he has worked as a film editor and has edited more than 250 very different films. Among them are the fiction films The Pathfinder (Oscar-nominated) and Everlasting Moments (Golden Globe-nominated), and the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence (both Oscar-nominated).

In addition to his work as an editor, Andersen lectures and teaches at workshops, film festivals, film schools and universities around the world and also works as a supervising editor.

In 2005, Andersen received the prestigious Danish lifetime achievement award, the Roos Prize, for his outstanding achievements in documentary filmmaking. In 2012, he became a professor of editing at the Norwegian Film School. Andersen is a founding member of Rough Cut Service, an international network of editors dedicated to strengthening documentary editing and the role of the editor.
