For the third consecutive year, AvistaVulcão celebrated the anniversary of the Capelinhos Volcano at Casa da Missão, this year with the theme of America.
The 65th anniversary of the Azorean Refugee Act and the consequent wave of Azorean immigration to the USA, the last of the contemporary era, were also commemorated.
The cycle "It's a Volcano for America" consisted of an artistic residency by the American artist Bronte Stahl, an exhibition, and a popular gathering with a presentation of the residency's results and a debate moderated by Professor Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida.
As a complement to the cycle, we organized an exhibition at the Capelo Handicraft House consisting of objects from the time of emigration to the USA, such as barrels, photographs, clothing, tableware, emigration visas, etc., donated by the inhabitants of Faial. This exhibition aims to pay homage to the emotions of those times, which still mark the daily life of these islands, whether in the objects from America that we have at home, or in the return of our American friends and family during the summer. As one emigrant said: "I left the island but the island never left me". It should be noted that the exhibition was made possible with the participation of the inhabitants who donated their personal objects for the exhibition, which is open to the public between September 27th and October 27th, 2023. Exhibition organized in partnership with the Association of Friends of the Capelinhos Lighthouse.
