Artistic Residency - Visual Arts
António Regis da Silva (Portugal)
Creation of a Lithography Exhibition

Based on field research, the artist worked with basalt stone to develop a lithographic work and create natural pigments. In lithography, the use of volcanic rocks is extremely unusual, and therefore the residency in Faial served as an experimental laboratory where in-situ lithographic printing techniques using rocks such as basalt were tested and explored in depth. Beyond questioning the materials themselves (rocks/pigments/paper) and techniques (lithography/in-situ artistic practice), the artist explored themes related to the place of origin of the rocks, making the works a window into understanding the place itself in its natural and human components. This process of investigation and creation culminated in an exhibition that was presented at Casa Manuel de Arriaga, on Faial Island, and at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, United Kingdom.
